Nice work, claghorn - I think I want to do this to mine now! Having the spool in the hot box is going to be good for long-term filament dryness too...

The coathanger trick is neat. You may not need it if the feed is really nice, remember with a vertical feed the moving axes aren't pushing the filament back off the roll all that much, but it's a nice easy safeguard for a really full roll.

the cover for that needs to also cover filament roll to help keep it clean and dry. also do like me and make a bent wire cloths hanger to fit close across spool and hang by gravity from spool center hole to prevent filament unwinding off side of spool

Spambot poetry or google translate fail?

The way you've got that spooling off is perfect.

The hole in the back leaves not enough bend radius for the filament (it can get jammed going into the extruder), and the low angle means the y axis pulls nearly directly on the spool for forward movements, and will push the filament off the spool in backward movements (increasing the likelihood of tangles back there, especially on full spools).

The top entry like that creates minimal push-pull on the filament with either x or y moves, leaving the extruder to do all the pulling (which is ideal).

It is a bit more tricky on the design of the lid though, I think you may be onto a winner there though... Any way you could box the whole lot there??

Yet another spool holder with bits and pieces extracted from other models and remixed with some of my own design:

Long description here:

http://home.comcast.net/~tomhorsley/har … mount.html

Now the eternal question is: Should the filament roll over the top like I have it in the picture, or come off the other way and go around back and through the hole? I figure the way I have it will minimize the effort of dragging it off the spool, but I'll need a top for the case that goes over the whole shebang to do that.
