No, it does not sound right. Melt pressure compresses the thrust bearing during operation. Do not preload the thrust bearing, as there is no need and there is no other bearing surface to preload with.

This has been elaborated upon in Step 7 of the v1.2 instructions:

Axial movement of 2-3cm is normal. Slide the auger so that the thrust bearing is compressed during the future assembly steps. Pressurized plastic will handle the compression in operation.

I know your kit is a v1.1 kit, but assembly between v1.1 and v1.2 is identical.

I assume this means that the compression on the thrust bearing is coming from the shaft collar, and not from the wood. With the shaft collar as far as it can go on the auger (as in step 1), there is no way to achieve compression on the bearing. This implies to me that we need to adjust the location of the shaft collar in the direction of the thrust bearing, so that we achieve compression in step 22. Does that sound right?

Yup, the gap is normal. Leave the auger in the position that compresses the thrust bearing during assembly, especially during placement on the base. Check step 22 of the instructions.

I'm assembling my filastruder (v1.1), and I feel like I've got a problem. There's a gap between the thrust bearing and the wood. The lengths of the four like nylon bushings is greater than that of the thrustbearing and shorter bushing combined by about an eight of an inch. Intuition tells me that there should be a much tighter fit here. Am I wrong?
