if you tighten your belt... you need to make sure you can still slide the y axis by hand... if you couldn't and it's making noise, than your belt is not even...
as for driver for step motor... you can try switching the y with x.. see if it will cause X to go crazy or not...
like "thatguy" said, if filament is too tight, y might skip steps... but there probably won't be any "grinding" noise...

It could be a binding issue with the Y axis. Can you manually move in back and forth? When I got mine there were some loose screws that I gently tightened, but then I could no longer slide the Y carriage. Turns out they were loose for a reason, some kinda hokey bearing alignment technique.
Or, second thought which you might not know yet. If the filament can't come off the spool easily it will cause the Y axis to not be able to move forward. It will make grinding noises etc.

It sounds like your Y-axis stepper driver my not have gotten set before they sent it out. It's a fairly easy process but you might want to check with them to see what their procedure is for setting it. Also, it's worth running through http://www.solidoodle.com/how-to-2/troubleshooting/.

Shoot support an email -> http://www.solidoodle.com/contact/ but in the mean time ^ check that link and search around the forums here. There are a bunch of posts pertaining to Y-axis stepper motors. I would be willing to bet one or 2 are about the same thing you are running into.

recently my y axis did that to me too.... but after switching stepper chips(z to y or x to y or e to y etc) I realized... there was a lose fine metal string that shorted my chip... After cleaning it, it works fine again. :-(
blow your board like the classic nintendo cartridge and see if it works

I had a similar issue when I got mine. To fix it I unplugged everything and manually moved all axis to their respective end stops plugged it back in and it was fine. I also had a loose wire on either the hot end or the thermistor (can't remember which) and that made it get goofy till I found the problem so you might want to take a look at those connectors also.

Managed to get the extruder to heat up using pronterface. Any idea why RH is not working for me?

Also, the extruder can't really move along the y-axis.

Hi all,

I just received my SD3 today. Installed the driver and RH. Connected my SD3 to my laptop, and followed the instructions to remove the test filament.

When I click on heat extruder, on my PC, I can see the temp rising to 195, but when I clicked on retract, nothing happens. Turn out that my extruder did not heat up at all even though in RH, it shows it's at 195. Heated my printed in RH, temp rises in RH, but physically too.

I disconnected the SD3, but found out that in RH, it's still shows printer connected and i can heat up both extruder and printbed in RH.

What am I doing wrong?
