I personally have a webcam positioned at my printer and run Open Broadcasting Software on a justin.tv account, and then have VNC Server hooked up so I can remotely stop a print if something bad happens.

I still check my phone like I'm a 14 year old high school girl though, so I'm not sure if it's the best solution.

Right now I'm have 8cm from board edge to nozzle face, that will reduce the chance of ramen, relative to 10cm. It will also reduce the filament diameter by 50-100 microns.

If the guide is not positioned properly, you get something like ramen. It's like trying to push a rope - hot filament has nearly no stiffness.
