Sorry for not posting a follow-up, I'm printing again. Unfortunately I'm not sure what the problem was. I'm leaning towards my temperatures being too low. I seem to see a correlation between the extruder temperature and the filament drive skipping. Unfortunately I changed a bunch of things trying to resolve the problem and can't be sure exactly what fixed it.
I talked to the creator of the BukBot printer earlier this week. He suggested that to find the correct printing temperature for a roll of filament you should reduce the extruder temperature until it starts skipping, then increase the temperature until it starts feeding correctly and use that temperature for that particular roll of filament. So far, so good...
Speaking of the BukBot printer, I was pretty impressed. The extruder moves in X and Z while the heated platform moves in Y. It's heated bed apparently will get up as high as 150C. He's using synchro mesh cables instead of belts to drive his stages and the printer is very quiet. The kit price is about the same as Solidoodle, the assembled printers are a couple hundred more.

TiM

Slowing down doesn't make any difference. I can hit the extrude button over and over and it just keeps extruding, but when I start a print, a small print at that, by the second or third layer the drive wheel is skipping and the filament is not coming out. My extruder fan is running and I did try baking my spool out. I'm having the same problem even after swapping hot ends. Does anybody have any other suggestions? All help would be greatly appreciated.

TiM

I'm starting to get depressed. Everything was fine until it wasn't. Now I can't print anything. I swapped out the hot end and it still has problems feeding. At the same time I seem to be getting excessive drool when heating. I went to swap in my Chinese made hot end only to find out I have to print Lawsey's hot end mount. Of course being unable to print anything precludes me from doing so. It's rather frustrating. Any additional suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

TiM

I don't know if you saw the part about the backpressure. after extruding 100mm the filament will back up 4 or 5mm due to the pressure inside the hotend forcing the extruder drive wheel to reverse.

TiM

TiM

It seems like a clog, but swapping in a whole new hotend didn't make any difference. It's fine for a bit, then it starts skipping and no plastic coming out. I've been printing with these spools for a month with no problems. Natural, blue and black. It started with the blue, I switched to black, same problem. I switched to the natural as I've printed with it the most, same thing. I baked it at 195F for a couple hours this morning and still the same thing. I run the extruder at 200C and always have. Any suggestions?

TiM
