PLA works great, but be aware, it is a lot more brittle than ABS. It doesn't flex, it just fails.
It also is not so great at fine detailed models, as the ooze tends to diminish the details.. and its a PITA to get bridging or short-layer time layers working (it tends to melt very badly when doing for example, the top of Yoda's head) without a fan

So if you want a thin walled durable piece, then use ABS. If you want fine surface detail use ABS. Everywhere else, you can use PLA.

DesignerFred wrote:

I plan on using only PLA.... For the environment...hope it works out.

I just loaded up my first spool of PLA after several weeks of ABS. and i must say i may be hooked. the parts are stiffer, they stick like hell to a hairsprayed glass bed, and absolutely no warp issues! (switched to the PLA roll after catching hell trying to get the idler ends printed warp free in ABS for a set of rostock parts.)

ABS has its uses. for when you need a part to come into contact with higher temp areas (extruder fan/carriage), or when you want a part you can bring to a nice surface finish quickly and easily with acetone vapor. but other than that, i think i'll be joining you on the PLA quest! for great justice!

At $150 that could be an expensive crayon drawing. There's no engineers I know that would try and sell you a physical object based on a drawing they did when they were like 6 (well I wouldn't anyway).
A working prototype would help them quite a lot, the concept is good, I have heaps of scrap and failed prints already, plus the suggestion here of blending scrap with virgin pellets is very sensible indeed.
Kind like when SD first announced the SD3, and the metal parts were all hand made, with dints and gouges. .. .. actually I think this pic is still on their page somewhere, but at least it showed there was a physical object, that looked like it would actually work.

I tried creating ABS slurry from my waste so that maybe prints will start to properly stick to the bed.
No luck so far- after 3 days of keeping rafts in acetone I now have a soft blob of ABS. Anybody know how long it takes for that stuff to dissolve? Do I have to use ABS shavings instead !?
