Apparently, the pocket tactics guys seem to paint their stuff with acrylic (thingiverse.com/thing:30463) which is what is used for instance for warhammer 40k. I'm assuming they're using a primer first, but maybe you can ask them
If you just want a uniform color you can use spray cans or an airbrush.

I really wish what I was doing wasn't for an invention so I could show it off a little bit, I'm doing some really cool things with mixed colors and different joints and such.  I might have to make some dumbed down samples just to show the features and ideas.
