So I started with my wooden pen holders to laser engrave these cute pups and kitties.
I got better at it after some trial and error by tweaking parameters of the image and software settings. And I'd recommend test engraving before doing any real engraving to see how the laser strength will reflect on the object (the depth and effect it has on the object).
I use a da Vinci Jr. 1.0 A Pro to do it.
