As a school we don't have to worry about making a project economically feasible - the ultimate goal is education. That being said - we are a government school - we can only afford the upfront costs if one of the grant applications that I've put in come through.  In the initial part of the project we'd just be purchasing pre-ground plastic to produce our own spools. We'll build up some expertise and experience before attempting the full recycling process. The educative potential for full recycling is pretty interesting.

the hardest most expensive part of recycling is grinding. Either very tedious or requires expensive equipment.
ABS may be a better choice to start with.
iirc there has been some success with home extruding pet. check the forum posts.
While a very noble goal do your homework as it may not be feasible unless you have a chunk of money to throw at the project with limited returns.

I am investigating a recyclebot for a primary (elementary) school in WA. Matched to a 3D printer. Invesigation is over materials:

Ideally one that can extrude PET or HDPE or other locally available plastic so that students can be involved in the whole process from collection, sorting etc to --> 3D prints.

Looking at the Filastruder led me here.

Any advice appreciated
