Doh. If only local makerspace had metal CNC lathes, then we'd be set. I've tinkered with the idea of getting one of the ones people make to sell on Precious Plastic like (just random listing, not suggesting this one is better than any of their other listings for custom screws): https://bazar.preciousplastic.com/en/li … barrel-set . Not sure how much the motor would like it, and it would be quite a bit of work reinforcing everything to handle the additional strain.

That seems to be like what you were trying to do with the hammer drill bit (varying compression).

Giving up on this idea. Got everything back together on Saturday and couldn't get any flow whatsoever. The head of the bit which I thought would help with shear melting of the pellets seemed to do nothing but act as a dam to prevent flow.

Update number 1. Bit doesn't look like the one in the picture, the flights are evenly spaced along the length of the bit, not not closer together like in the picture. Had to cut the tail end off the bit and grind the carbides on the tip and the shaft down so the collar, thrust bearing and nylon spacer would fit. Got that done and heated it up and... didn't wait long enough and the screw jammed either from being too cold to the clearances are too tight.

Back at it tonight, going to use my mini lathe which I should have used to begin to shave a little more off the shaft of the bit. I found that forming a 7/16 inch hex head with a grinder isn't all that easy to do, and lucky for me, when the bit jammed, the motor popped off the hex head that I made, so I didn't do any damage to the motor. Incompetence does have some advantages.

Just curious what the people here would think of a hammer drill bit working as an extruder screw.
The one pictured is sold by Bosch and would give some compression towards the tip of the bit. The carbide cutter could be ground down if need.

Hammer Drill Bit

I did a search for hammer drill prior to posting this, but came up empty.
