the stand alone version of Slic3r does not, at this time.. But using Slic3r through Repetier Host WILL give you time and filament usage estimates.

I am patiently waiting for a new version of Slic3r to be released - they have had a "teaser" up for a while now.. and beta versions are available, but I will wait for a proper release.

As mentioned, the FT-5 is not for the faint of heart - it is a beast. I have a first generation model..

Personally, I also prefer Slic3r - more "common sense" control, and it can do things that Cura can not (to my knowledge)

If I were you, I would start with PLA, get that mastered, then work in to ABS
(you will want to build sides for the printer - ABS likes to be kept warm - Nylon will want to be kept warm as well)

I'm torn between Slic3r and Cura for slicing.

Do not worry about it use the one that make sense to you. I prefer slic3r but cura has worked when the latter would not .

Several folk here have built the FT5  and can answer questions  . IMHO you could have made a worst choise for a kit.

If you have not already done so download the manual and study it. And there is a folger tech forum that can help.

It will be, though. Mere moments ago I placed an order for a Folger Tech FT-5 R2 kit. I've studied like crazy for two months with Design Spark Mechanical. I'm torn between Slic3r and Cura for slicing. I've had good luck (maybe) with Spin 3D Mesh Converter.

I'd like to play with PLA or ABS to get good and confident, and then switch to Taulman's Bridge Nylon for generating saleable product. The nearest 3D printing job shop is nearly 100 miles away.

A bold plan, and subject to change at a moment's notice on good advice!
