Hi Carl
Everything was pretty close except for the first layer.
Do you prefer to use skirt/brim or raft. in Makerbot desktop the only option is raft so I never tried the other.

Thanks
Dale

I trust you loaded the correct profile for your machine? MB desktop is optimized for MB machines. You will need to tweak S3D a bit as it is generic to all machines with a profile to get you in the ball park.

It is a kind of over extrusion . just back off on your first layer setting. Also you may need to raise the nozzle just a bit .

Slic3r uses a 200% default on this i have mine set for 150% . you want the nozzle close to the bed but it should not be leaving furrows like a plow.
Looks like you are getting some nozzle drag as well.

hate to say this, but you wasted $150

If you can, get your money back.

IMHO he just needs to figure out his setting just like any other slicer.
Tin

Looks like combination of over extrusion and low nozzle/bed temperature. And it looks like ABS filament. You have good bed adhesion but not average which cause pattern in first layer.

If the rest layer looks ok and the size of the print is accurate, then your nozzle is too close to the bed and contribute to over extrusion for the first layer. There is also a setting in S3D to fine tune the amount of extrusion specifically for first layer.
