Linksprite diy cnc 3 axis engraver machine which is an advanced version of the Computerized Numerical Control machine. They focus on the new laser technology. More over it you can check on this article on LinkSprite CNC which help to solve more of your query related to it.
The hardness of GRBL material controls the efficiency of the laser. You can use the Arduino board to run this machine. The Vanilla Arduino is ideal for the pcb milling.

The other possibility is fusion 360 but you do need to sign up it is an on line program but no cost for educational hobby use.

I have been playing with cambotics to preview g code.

you should just need a cam program to generate g code. this little machine seems to be a knockoff of the bigger X-Carve project from insructables if that helps.
I was hoping some one would pitch in wit a free for home use cam package but not sure if they exist.

Be careful because a lot of the on line tutorials are for home brew lasers and plotters. While these are cnc machines the g code is a little diferant.
https://www.inventables.com/technologies/easel
Scroll down and click on the carve like a pro icon to play in the sandbox.

http://jscut.org/

https://inkscape.org/en/
Hope this helps i need to get my machine running and make something.
Tin

I just purchased on of these.
so far i have gotten the driver loaded on my laptop and have gotten it to jog.

I downloaded desk engrave
and camotics but with very limited results

So any recommendations on control software and easy to use cam program and an easy to use simulator program that would be helpful .

I prefer software that are OS projects and not cloud based. I may try easel is i have to .
The machine came pre-loaded with GRBL and has a grbl woodpecker control board and no end stops or connections for them .

TIA

Tin Falcon
