I use 405 nm lasers that I found on ebay. Link at the bottom of this post. They produce a very thin line and do not have the sparkly effect that I see with red ones. I suspect that the sparkles that are present in red add noise. I chose these particular lasers due to voltage requirements. There are many blue lasers that require 3v instead of 5v. So that is something to consider when changing to another color or module size. No changes to software or settings. Just wire and mount them and start scanning. I got lazy and just cut the lead wires to to red ones and spliced the blue ones right in to avoid disassembly of my scanner.

I was unaware of there existing a 8mp pi camera. Thanks for point that out. I'll have to look into one.

( http://www.ebay.com/itm/Focusable-20mw- … 2749.l2649 )

What blue lasers did you use? Did you have to make any configuration changes for the software to key off 'blue' instead of 'red'?

I can scan matchbox cars with pretty good detail, but can't quite get satisfaction with 15mm wargame figures. I think I'm going to install the 8MP camera module...blue lasers might be a good mod at the same time.

Hello, I built an Atlas 3d scanner from FFD prints using the thingiverse files found here: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:1280901

After changing the lasers to blue ones, I'm getting much cleaner scans that are approaching the 1/4 mm resolution that was promised. (BTW blue lasers also allow it to see black items without dusting them with white powder) Here is a 12mm laser mount that can be used for both left and right sides of the printed version.: https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:2453715 (Read the description in the thingiverse before posting feedback as editing or a bench grinder will be in order.)

It works pretty good. I think the hardware and software are solid but the enclosure leaves much room for improvement. I think that my trouble (double misaligned shell like everyone else) has to do with alignment and calibration. Alignment of the printed enclosure is an exercise in futility. Maybe if it were printed on an SLA printer instead of FFD, the mating surfaces would be smoother and be able to move things like lasers and camera mounts without such jumpiness. Not that I could design one at all much less any better than Uriah Liggett. Thanks BTW for giving us this great open source project.

I got my Atlas 3d kit from Murobo.com not a self source parts collection.

My question is: Can we get the drawings for the Acrylic Enclosure so that that those of us who have a laser can cut out own?
