The standard Raspberry Pi camera module has the IR filter in place. The NOIR camea, which lacks the filter, is for night-time and low light imaging. I think most individuals have been using the standard camera.

Unless you are ghost hunting you woul need the filter. Otherwise the camera is going to pickup light that the scanning software is not designed to account for.
