I realize that but I avoid unlocking software that I actually get some use out of.

I use carrara to create a terrain object from a greyscale and then convert it to vertex and make it watertight.  doesn't take long, but it can get pretty heavy in triangles and may take some time to slice.

It does cost but worth it, if you take the time to configure everything properly it can have amazing results. There is a post on the forum about this and I am pretty sure it should work for that purpose.
