Do it with power off. If a meter lead slips and shorts two pins you could blow your processor. They are also already doing this in another thread and are about 75% done.

First thing delete the redundant posts on this subject you were a bit quick on the draw when posting this.

A caveat even though i have worked in electronics for years I have not done much board repair and have never found the need to trace a board. But will try to help you here.
1)(a) yes (b) the components along the path will affect things.

2) primarily continuity but i expect actual ohm readings vill vary.

3)(a) download the chip data sheet and read it some beware many pages.
    (b) be familiar with basic electronic components and miroprocessors
  (c) Have big fresh note book write everything down and keep data organised.

4 power off the board for ohm readings. ir you were tracing with an oscilloscope you would need the board powered up.
Hope this helps.

I've decided to tear apart this Jr I have and start taking Pin readings but am unsure of where to start. I know from personal experience the Jr is seen by Arduino software. So to summerize, here's what I need to help assist the community in porting Marlin or Repitier

1) Am I looking at the Atmel chip/solder points and its relationship to a specific endpoint, or do I need to look for a bunch of different things?

2) When taking readings, what should I look for?

3) Is there anything else I need to do to prepare other than teardown and jumping in?

4) Probably the least intellegent, but should the machine stay on during the process?

Looking to help progress the Da Vinci Hack collection as much as I can!
