For a single-walled cube, slice it with 0% infill, 1 perimeter, no bottom or top layers...(a 1mm brim would help for adhering) also set your extrusion multiplier to 1 and measure and enter an accurate filament diameter. This should print out a single-walled cube. Then with calipers, measure the wall thickness. It should be whatever your nozzle diameter is X 1.2...so for a 0.4 nozzle you should be at .48mm. If not, then adjust your extrusion multiplier accordingly until it is correct.

I had not calibrated for one of my rolls of filament and was pulling my hair out trying to figure out the banding problem I was having. I could have sworn it was mechanical; but it turns out that over extruding will lay more plastic down then necessary and that causes excessive shrinkage as previous layers cool, then the process seems to repeat (my theory, anyway). Ran the calibration as above and it went away! It is also even more apparent with a denser infill.

Not yet, will try that when I get home from work today.

So you're saying there may be inconsistency in the filament diameter causing over extrusion in the print..? I'm thinking of picking up some calipers on the way home today. Also, the prints above was using 15% infill, should I try with no infill as well?

I used a hair dryer to heat it and within a millisecond it turned on... I think it's not preheating by itself, and as soon as it gets a bit warm it turns on. My room is super cold because of the winter, maybe that's why it started recently...

And because I'm such a dolt, I broke the throat screw for the extruder, and it snapped within both the hot end plate, and the plate below the extruder gear.... I tried to remove both of them but they're stuck in there good.

Good news is I can get a replacement throat screw and the aluminum extruder hot end plate... but I couldn't find the part of the plate below the extruder gear, see screenshot attached lol.

The thing in the screenshot is the part I can't find, but the other two parts I was able to order:
1. http://www.robotshop.com/ca/en/afinibot … -tube.html
2. http://www.robotshop.com/ca/en/afinibot … block.html

So yeah, totally unrelated problem now. I opened a support ticket with Robotshop to see if I can some how purchase just that piece alone.

So his could be one of those and the heater that is in question could be going out. Could also be a failing power supply. There are a number of things that could be at fault here. He is just going to have to cut them down as he can and figure out what is not at fault first. I find it easier to find what is not the problem first.

Hey Sorry for the late response, I am using a Afinibot A3 3D Printer (Based on Prusa i3 I believe).
I re-adjusted the Z axis on both sides using a ruler to measure, it seems like it was slightly off.

I am waiting for my 3D printer to boot up, I get two rows of squares for like 15 minutes before it actually turns on... which is weird, it started doing it recently, before it booted up instantly. The layer height is set to 200 microns, I've printed perfectly fine with PLA, and even in ABS. Though I think you guys might be right about the Z-Axis, because I recall it made a squeaking noise when it was resetting the position. After it finishes booting, I will try moving the Z-Axis using the repetier host software to see if it still squeaks to see if my fixes the squeaking problem. Anyone know of a fast printing model I can try to test to see if this will happen again? (The one I used took 11hours 30 mins)

Edit:
Taking longer than I thought to boot (waiting 45 minutes...)

While it may be Z banding, I would like to point out that most pellets need to be dried before extruding with your Filastruder. It looks like you either did not dry or perhaps did not dry enough. That is, if it indeed is not a Z issue.

Swap for a trusted roll of ABS to see if it disappears.

It is called Z banding and could be caused by a loose bed or bent lead screw. I also believe you have to use an odd number for the layer height on your particular printer because the thread is non standard. If it happens at regular intervals like that the issue is almost always mechanical.
