Lots of these shredders are really expensive. Precious plastics is great for getting ideas on designs, but even with its relatively low costs, their shredder isn't always affordable by maker spaces, schools, people who just wanna mess around at home, etc. But you can build a shredder with washers, plywood and a few basic things you can get on CL or at Home Depot, for under 100 bucks, and the main cost is a used gear motor. But, if you make small blades, you don't need a giant motor; even 600 in-lbs or a bit less torque will work. Check out this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kv72UHO-0c8 for how to make one. Hope it helps some of you who want to make one.

Nice! Needs a motor though. I get the liability issues, so perhaps just provide a way to connect one without too much fuss. Maybe have the hand crank held on to a square or hex drive perhaps? 1/2" socket wrench adapter? Just some thoughts that might help you sell more of them without opening yourself up to liability issues. If I do something stupid like attach my impact wrench to it, that's not on you.

As the Kickstarter comes to a close and i have done a lot of work on it since i have gone on break i have been able to drop the price. I have been able to drop the price down to 125$ from 350$. This is because now i am going to mill it out instead of waterjetting. This will basically drop price of machining down by 3 times but increase time of machining by 3 times.

I have them on sale on my website right now. here http://www.thegreenengineers.com/store/ … -shredder/

also keep up to date on my dev blog for the reclaimer http://www.thegreenengineers.com/blogs/ … -dev-blog/

I wonder why anyone has commented about the Precious Plastic Shredder: https://preciousplastic.com/en/videos/build/shredder/
It's opensource, laser cutting the parts costs around $350 plus gear motor and frame, it's fully documented and has a huge community of builders and helpers at https://davehakkens.nl/community/forums/. The shredder proposed here would require to hook up a gear motor (add $300-$400 more) and you also need a metal frame to fix it steady. A hand crank is only feasible for shredding vegetables or plants in general, unless you are a super human with 300 kilos of muscle capable of hand shredding hard plastic.

The main problems with the grinder are heat, input size and viable output.
Like an industrial extruder, the plastic in the grinder experiences enough shear to generate heat. It becomes noticeable after grinding for about 5 minutes by hand.
Due to the size of the opening, the grinder can only handle chunks about the size of a ping-pong ball if they have an irregular shape that catches on the auger. An actual ping pong ball would have to be split into pieces before the grinder could process it.
Finally, the grinder could only manage about a cup of shredded plastic in a minute. In the best scenario, it might make double that, but only with a strong, fast motor and "quick" pieces of plastic.

If you spend $65 or more for a good one with a pulley, and attach a powerful motor to it, the grinder can actually shear larger chunks where the auger meets the edge of the "hopper." As long as the parts can get into the opening, the part gets sheared bit by bit until it reaches the cutting plate, where it is either split or shaved into pieces smaller than the holes in the cutting plate.
http://www.soliforum.com/topic/15731/an … lastruder/

It'd be less than $120, you're rounding up and not considering the discount tier after 1000 blades. I'm not sure there's value in having the shredder quite that large in terms of maximizing interested customers (if it is too large, it will be too expensive for folks to be interested). I think most folks can get their parts down to baseball size, its going from baseball size to granulate that is difficult. Remember too that the more blades you have, the more torque you need - stronger shafts, bearings, gears, and possibly motor.

The "$100" number mentioned was just for the waterjet parts.

Just trying to help.

the reason why shredders are more expensive is because of the versatility. Some industrial grade shredders are engineered with so much strength that they can shred cars. Try to do that with a meat shredder. I just did some analysis of the shredder and the max shear I found capable of 280Mpa if max hardened (this is for a not yet optimized design). That is enough to shear brass and aluminum and anything softer try to do that with a meat shredder.

I was just about to say that casting might be the way to go, since I can easily get a decent meat/bone grinder for under $75, but custom-manufactured units like industrial shredders always seem to cost a fortune. While the upfront costs are staggering, I could easily see a robust $150-$200 unit achieving a couple dozen grand on Kickstarter. Another $50-$100 for a motor, drive system, and safety housing, and it could be a winner.
Of course, it's a bit late to go this way for the Kickstarter, and the housing might be more expensive than my guess here, but one can hope...
