You can confirm the problem by checking the hex socket for axial play - it should be able to move back and forth a few millimeters. If the shaft collar slips, it drives the hex socket into the gear motor.

OK it must be the second one. I have been running it for about 45 minutes now, its doing better it wont stop spinning entirely but it slows down and speeds up constantly. Once the last bit of ABS runs though it I will adjust the thrust bearing and try again

Thank is not normal. If the motor is hitting the current limit, the motor is overloaded. Generally that can happen from two things:

1.) Not waiting the 15 minutes for the assemble to fully heat up after reaching the desired temperature.

2.) Improper assembly, generally positioning the shaft collar incorrectly which allows axial force (thrust) to be transferred to the gearbox.

Hello all just finished assembling my Filastruder. I may have a problem but I cant tell. Currently when I am extruding ABS at 190c i pour the pellets in after heating the assembly then turn on the motor. Once the barrel assembly is loaded with ABS along its full length the motor crawls to a stop as the current limiter stops it at 1.6 amps. it still extrudes during this time and once a little more space is made then the motor spins a bit more and then hits current limit. Is this normal and if not how can i get the motor to turn the bit continuously. the filament seems to be coming out ok but when the motor kicks back on theres a little surge out of the tip.
