I think I finally found the sweet spot on this filament.
I went down to 80% extruder settings on both shell and infill and then I had to go suprisingly 15 degrees below the lowest recommended extruder temp... Ive been standing by to see if the extruder shows any signs of stressing from the low temp setting but it seems to be all good... print layers seem to be clean now and layer adhesion is still good. Hopefully all stays well.

Okay, the extrusion settings are only available on the windows XYZ Pro ware. I was able to load it using parallels on my mac though. I then tried going down in 5% increments to see if there was a change in the layers... made it all the way down to the minimum which is 80% and there was no change... Im going to try to raise the temp to the max of 240 and see if anything happens and then go down from there...

My layers stick great, the issue I'm having is that periodically there are stray pieces of ABS that stand on end as if extra filament came out and didn't know where to go... I dunno. The weird thing is as messy as the internal layers get the top layer is pretty damn smooth. Problem is that the messy layers in between have to be monitored because those stray ABS strands tend to latch on to the extruder throughout the many passes that the extruder makes across the print and it gunks up on there... I think have to pause the print to brush it off because it will probably eventually clog if I leave it be.

Hatchbox is sending me a new spool of ABS in case its defective which I think it is.. but Im still trying to see if I can diagnose the issue.

Im almost of the mind that the filament is just bad.
I used these same settings for my sainsmart abs and the prints never did this.

Ive so far tried to lower and raise the extruder temperature 5 and 10 degrees in each direction with no improvement on either end.

If you guys have any suggestions Id still be happy to hear them but Im leaving a poor review on amazon and hoping they will reach out to me to replace the spool

I tried lowering the Z settings and it just made the nozzle run into the previous layers with an ugly scraping sound. So I lifted it back up one notch and it doesn't appear to scrap, but still collects buildup from the messy abs fraying on the previous layers.

I decided to try a different brand of ABS and ordered a spool from hatchbox on Amazon. Their PLA has treated my well so I thought I'd try their ABS.
Prior to this I've only used Seinsmart ABS and it's worked fairly well and produced decent prints.
With this new ABS I'm having some difficulty figuring out what settings to tweak.

Bed has been calibrated using paper method in the sticky.

First off let me say that the final top layers comes out with a decently smooth finish. What I'm concerned about is the layers in between. They seem extremely messy from what I've experienced with my previous ABS. And I find myself having to periodically check on the print ad the nozzle can get a slight buildup of ABS due to rubbing across all the fly away looking pieces as it moves about.

Any suggestions where to start?

Print settings I'm using are:
Extruder 230
Platform 90

Infill 15%
Layer height 0.15

Shells
Side 3
Top 6
Infill 4

All speeds set to 30
