If you're printing on blue painters tape, you don't actually need the heat bed on.

Looks to me that your PLA isn't getting cool enough towards the edge, I have had the same problem with the teeth of Emmet's gear heart. Print cooling fan will help!

The bed has painters tape on it, which i think is probably ok. It feels like 75, in that i can hold my hand on it. if it was 110 i'd not be able to do that.

I will try to level the bed again, and retry.

In regards to the bed temp 75 is fine but I would not trust an IR thermometer. They do not measure accurately reflective surfaces like glass or Kapton on aluminum. They also have problems with small targets like hotends.

Get a digital cooking/kitchen thermometer.

It looks to me that your bed is not level.

I'm quite new to 3D printing. I've bought a CTC, and am learning fast.

I've not had time to do any mods at all yet, and I'm just playing and learning so far.

I started to print the vase example included with replicatorg. I aborted it because it wasn't turning out right, but i'd really appreciate some advice on what caused the problem.

The vase model is a triangular prism. Two of the faces of the prism have come out absolutely flawlessly, but the front face is as shown in the photo. As it was printing, you could see the the top surface of this face was higher than the nozzle tip, and as it moved round, the tip was deflecting that side of the model.

I'm printing with the CTC supplied PLA. Ive not changed any settings - according to the display the extruder temp was 210 and the bed temp was 110 (but that's quite wrong - my infra red thermometer says it's about 75 degrees).

I'm far from an expert, but my guess is that this is probably due to inadequate cooling of the PLA. And it's probably something that where a glitch happens, it gets worse and worse because the PLA is coming into contact with the hot end, and getting further heated. Plus the bed temp is too high.

I hope to build a 40mm fan duct soon. Ive got the mosfet on order already.
