The Filawinder won't be precise enough with the giude. Filament is wide enough to slide into place on its own with a little nudging to get it to the ends of the spools. For coils you will want something more precisely calibrated to the width of the wire. There are some coil winders on Thingiverse, but they aren't completely finished designs. It might be the right project to cut your teeth on. I didn't know anything about electronics and motors and stuff before the Filawinder, but it provided the impetus for me to finally learn.

I can't get consistent layers with a drill, and it just doesn't look very good. I think I am not getting the maximum amount of coils because of how the wires overlap. I'm trying to copy a solenoid I already have, but using the same size wire a coil wound to full capacity still seems to have a noticeably lower resistance.

I am trying to make a solenoid coil, and I'd like for it to look neat and machine wound. Is there any reason that I couldn't use a Filawinder for this? Obviously I would need to make a different guide piece, but in principle I don't see why it wouldn't work. I'd just like a second opinion before I try and find someone to change the code to what I need, since I'm hardly even a beginner when it comes to arduino.
