The same can be done with historic buildings. Walk around it with a camera or smartphone, scan it in, model it. Even if it never gets printed, just to have a 3d image of something for history is significant, especially with the continuing evolution of virtual reality.

I agree 100%. I'm a nut for ancient history and while it is a fact that all antiquities will eventually break down and erode from age alone, the artifacts maliciously destroyed are irreplaceable. At least this is offering something that cannot be replaced.

Its a fantastic idea that we can preserve our relics with 3D printing, however, I am sure there are many out there who believe that nothing will be as good as the original.

I was crestfallen when I watched the videos of Daesh destroying ancient artifacts, but shortly after heard of a few projects to reconstruct renderings of the missing and demolished items. Iraqi and Syrian curators are calling on everyone in the world with home pictures and slides in different angles to generate exact replicas. Also, efforts to preserve other artifacts in the same light are underway by scanning intact items.
While it does not seem these renderings and .stls have been released to the public yet, this seems hopeful on many fronts. Here's a blurb from an artist's effort.
http://3dprint.com/114731/iranian-artist-3d-additivism/
