I would also suggest downloading Repetier and learning how to use the software while waiting, it can be a while for the machine to show up. But learning the software now means less time doing that later and more time printing and tuning in the settings for your machine. Watch Ian's YouTube vids on calibration and the software for the basic info needed and read the forums here. Lots of tips and potential problems and fixes already posted.

Hi edgeflyer, And welcome to the forum I know your going to like the SD when you get it, just the fact that your here reading up on things is going to help you achieve greatness

Yes, the squiggle part is the the raft and it is generated by the slicing software it is made to help the first layer of ABS or whatever your printing with stick to the platform/bed it sounds simple but getting hot plastic to stick to something can be tricky
there are some posts about using glass here on the forum, just do a search with 'glass bed' and you will find quite a few informative posts on the how and why of using it.

Welcome to the club, the raft is a way to get delicate parts to stick better to the build platform. Once you're dialed in there is not a lot of need for it but it helps in the beginning. There is also support which can be enabled that can allow you to print overhangs and features that you couldn't otherwise print. Both of these are enabled through settings in the slicing software that converts the STL file to gcode.

Glass bed is when you add a sheet of glass to the top of the heated or unheated aluminum build platform. Main purpose is to enable faster switching between prints so you don't have to wait for the bed to cool off and reheat to start your next print. Added benefits are it can provide a flatter surface if you have a warped aluminum bed, and coated with hairspray many find that it's a superior sticking surface than aluminum and kapton (orange tape) that comes with the SD2. The better the stick the less warp and curl you'll get.

Also important is to enclose the build environment to keep a more constant temp to combat warping and curling.

Hit up the search box and wiki.solidoodle.com for lots of information.

Just ordered a SD2 and have been scrambling to learn, learn, learn. I assume a raft is the squigglie base laid down before the part? Is this drawn in, or part of the software? What is the need, I would figure you would want the first layer of the part on a flat surface. Also I would like to learn more about using glass as a platform, but don't see any "basic" discussions on it. Thanks
