There is in fact an sd card slot on the board, but after having read your rant on the Workbench, and having had many of the same issues, I'm wondering if I shouldn't just throw a RAMPS 1.4 I have laying around in it. BTW, I had my x motor plug come out twice because of the control box placement issue. The sd card would be great to have to eliminate the connectivity issue this thing seems to be plagued with, but if the firmware is so bloated that it runs out of memory to communicate that regularly, it hardly seems worth keeping it. I'm just not sure if I should use the ramps or go for something newer. I only want to do this once...

I tried that very late last night, but I think I octoprint used it's printer settings, like speed, instead of slic3rs. Don't event get me started on the feed and flow rate sliders. I'll have to go through it again. It sucks that Solidoodle didn't deliver enough Workbenches for it to be popular. It's an awesome printer, but it needed an SD card. I see ramps in the future if this doesn't work.

I had a hard time getting Octoprint to slice with Cura embedded. Mostly, it took my default Cura settings and just used those instead of letting me make adjustments before slicing. I have ended up slicing in Repetier Host using Slicer, saving/exporting gcode to SD card, and drag and drop uploading to Octoprint. Mildly inconvenient, but not too bad.

0 to octopi took ten minutes. My problem now is getting it to play nice nice with my printer. If I let it slice with cura, and run a print, it prints at speeds I didn't know my workbench was capable of. I have a couple of balls of filaghetti to prove it. I cant seem to get my cura profile to behave like the repetier profile does. I may end up with repetier server because of it. From what I hear, cura seems great. I might be trying to over complicate it, but I cant find any settings to get at least similar behavior to RH on my workbench. Do any of you have any tips you can give me on the cura setup of octopi?

Thanks.

Once the Pi is setup (dont know if Tim does this or not) but it is real easy to upgrade after that. Basically you unplug your USB from your computer and plug it into the Pi. Then connect to your Pi webpage and upload the gcode and hit print. I have my running via Ethernet.

I have recently been working on this type of thing - a Raspberry Pi Wifi Print Server. I installed Repetier-Server and it works very well. I could control the printer from a network computer but it was also very cool to control it with my smartphone. But it got a bit annoying that I couldn't control the printer occasionally when I was standing at it. I then found a great touch screen for the Pi.

The keyboard/trackpad in the pic below is optional - I only really used it for setup/config but you can do that from another computer too.

grob wrote:

* Wifi usb dongle (needs to be known to be raspberry pi compatible, frequent source of difficulty otherwise)

Assuming the Pi still has Ethernet support, you can also connect directly to your router if its close enough. It doesn't have to be Wi-Fi. I would do this if at all possible, personally, because the area around my Wi-Fi network has hundreds of other networks competing for air space.
