Did you sand it first? Essentially you want to treat this just like wood. So my plan of action would be:

Print
Sand
Clean dust, etc off...
stain(apply, wipe off excess, let sit for much longer then the can says, wipe again, let dry)
Apply clear coat, lightly sand, and repeat for desired finish.

It's that easy. I used a plastic bristle brush to buff the rough outside down, planning on applying another coat of polyu, but I liked the finish... and so did she!

Printed using my standard PLA settings, only had to up the hotend temp by 10C. Printed a few duck calls and sanded and stained the one on the left. It also has a Bronzefill ring on it. The one on the right is lightly sanded on the top to show color difference.
