The chat works fine on computer, though browser and version may play a role in your experience. I use Opera browser on my desktop and I do not have autoscroll because of the version I use (outdated plugin). I am still attempting to get Hydra to do anything aside from taking up disk space, but it does allow alerts/notifications for desktop.

Personally, I have fallen in love with the smartphone (iPhone) app IRCCloud. I am sure this is also available on Android. With this, I get notifications if somebody mentions me or PMs me on the chat (Soliforum PMs are separate). If somebody is attempting to get into the chat via smartphone, please download an IRC app like the aforementioned. You can access the chat without it, but your eyes will thank you for the attempt.
I will post a screenshot of the needed changes once I can get the imgur app resurrected. In the meantime:

*Download IRCCloud
*Under settings, tap on Add Network
*Network- freenode
  Hostname- #soliforum
  Port- 6667
  Use SSL- Off (thanks jagowilson)
  And enter whatever identity you choose. IRCCloud is free to access the SF chat, so a password is not needed. You will stay logged in and notified until you logout from the room on your app.

This is my review and I hope this helps.

EDIT: To activate notification on the mobile app, once connected to #soliforum, open settings, scroll down to device, then activate Play Alert Sounds. At this time, you also want to make sure that under your phone settings, you have allowed that app to send notifications. This will keep you up to date while at work, driving, or flying a plane smile
