Hi Guys,

I kind of inherited a SD2, saving it from the scrapyard. The machine arrived in a horrible state, old had been layered on the guide rails, the machine was filthy with dust and filament, as well as the wooden bed support missing a corner. I also noticed that the liner bearing in the extruder carriage would pop out as it was moving about.

I did my best to clean her up and test her out. After a few attempts at getting RH to connect, I kinda gave up and thought I would tear her down for parts. When I had time on my hands, I repaired the wooden support, added wing nuts to the screws (one of the threaded leaves were missing) and just tinkered.

I was successful at getting RH to connect, and a number of times tried printing a test cube. Almost always at the same part of the print, the printer would shut down. I also tried using Cura to generate Gcode, but that would cause the printer to sit in a heading mode, and not launch the print.

This week I bought a copy of Simplify3D and not only did it connect straight away to the SD 2, but I tried a test print. Everything started off, and I started tracking the commands being sent in the communications window. To my surprise, at the fourth layer, the hot end suddenly turned itself off, and in fact stopped extruding due to firmware.

After a short time, the hot end heated up to temperature, and started extruding again. I thought maybe it was a loose connection. As I watched the fifth layer begin, I was surprised to see that the SD2 shut itself down all together. Looking at the communications log, I realised that the hot end had overheated, and gone above 220 deg. From what I know, the machine will abort at that temp not to damage the hot end.

Anyone ever have this kind of issue before? The SD2 is an older model and I had set the extruder to 195 as recommended by Solidddodle, so I was really surprised that it hit over 220.

Any ideas or discussions would be great. Love to get this machine back on her printing feet, and I am really hoping it's not an electronics issue.

Love to hear what you guys think...

- Skyler101
