The scan should improve the longer it has to view the detail. The original MS KinectFusion paper this was based on was scanning a Dell logo only 1-2mm thick so it should be fairly good given the time to average out the errors.

The gallery posts on their site look significantly better. Some indicated they were using the zoom and that seemed to help a lot. I will continue to perform some trial scanning since my printer is down and waiting on parts. I hope to increase the quality so I can print a personalized wedding cake topper for my daughter's wedding in June.

I've been playing with designing a scanner like the FabScan (http://hci.rwth-aachen.de/fabscan) with a line laser, a webcam, and a turntable (total cost of materials <100$). All the mechanical supports are printed with the SD2... It works quite nicely with a very nice resolution for objects that are in the range 2-20cm. Now I added a second laser to get better acquisition of some features, so I have to rethink my setup and rewrite the software. When I have something good to show, I'll post some results and share the wealth In the meantime, I leave you with a teaser:

I've seen a couple nice setups involving a Kinect or a Playstation 3 camera. I'll probably attempt one of these at some point myself. With the other options being software based I see no reason not to try those as well.
