I also recommend you get different smooth rods, preferably case hardened. The bearings will eat up those stock rods (cheap tool steel). I had grooves in the Y rods after only a couple of months.

it cuts easily enough with an angle grinder, or even a dremel, with cut-off wheel (on either). I am running two printers, both SD4s, with these rods installed, and neither are showing any signs of wear yet, running roughly 8 hours a day, 5-6 days a week for more than a month now.

I highly recommend you to change your rods. I was struggling to get my bed level on my sd3, until i swaped the carriage for the lawsy, and changed my rods... Come to find out, my original rods were not straight !!! now I have no leveling problems any more.

Also, your original rods are imperial size. they are a little over 8mm in dimension, I don't remember the exact size in imperial, but they are bigger. And on top of that, the old rods are hard to extract from the old carriage without braking them.

Save you some hassle, and the rods are not very expensive, you definitely need to go for it.

I confirm as well that lm8UU are not all the same ! they are cheap linear bearing, and so, their tolerance are not consistent. so you should get some spare to be sure everything slides smooth.

Original belts and pulleys are just fine

Oh boy i got a pack of 8, fingers crossed. if not ill buy a few more and keep as spare parts.

I had to replace my smooth rod, too. The LM8UU was too tight on the originals resulting in a rough, gritty feel. Bought some hardened smooth rod on eBay and they now glide very smoothly.

So I'm planning on using Lawsy's carriage replacement for my old, junk ones that my SD4 came with. I have been reading many threads about this and was told that since everything on my SD4 is stock, that I will have to use a modified X carriage found here

besides the LM8UU bearings, 4 lawsy piecese and the modded x carriage, will I need anything to do the change? Im going to reuse my rods and belts. I have new bolts and nuts though.
