There can be several reasons. One could be that you don't have it wired right. Another is that you don't have the right volt/amperage for the motor. not wired right you can change, I don't know that you can do anything about the other when using the davinci mb.

You can on a ramps or Rambo the ramps you use the trim pots to set that or use the firmware to digitally set it depending on the board.

The davinci the output is digitally set, I don't know if you can change it.

So you need a nema 17 that is the same range of volts and amp settings
so what you need to know is what the force and the # of steps per deg of rotation
generally I don't see to many start below 37oz.in/26Ncm 37 and are .4A (there are some but not many)
then they go up most common are the 1.2A - 1.5A but there are also 2A 2.5A and even some 3A

I don't know what the motors on the davinci are specified to draw

Thank you for everyones help but i cant be the only person on the globe with this issue. I bought an official davinci stepper from the australian reseller and the morons sent me the one from the x frame not the extruder stepper with the little gold cog, either way this is the only one out of three that has actually worked as it's supposed to.

Now speaking to these morons further they cant seem to find the actual stepper i need so i really wish someone out there could give me guidance as to why this specific brand is working when the others just rock back and forth and don't actually rotate.

Note I am swapping my extruder to mk8 set up so I needed to swap my pins to make it move the right way since the drive gear and hob are swapped in that set up.

so now I have pin 1 as orange pin 2 empty pin 3 is blue pin 5 is empty pin 6 is yellow.
this reversed my gear direction.

now if you have it pulsating you then you need to swap one set of the pins.
example if I was pulsating rather then turning I would swap pin 1 and 3. or swap pin 4 and 6. Only swap one of the pairs not both.

it will then spin. if its the spinning the wrong way then you will need to change the pins like I did.

I just took a closer look at the pins on my extruder and this is how mine is set up
pin 1 is yellow pin 2 is empty pin 3 is red pin 4 is blue pin 5 is empty pin 6 is orange

so it looks like the grounds will be pin 2 and 5
pin 1 and 3 are one pair and pin 4 and 6 are the other pair.
hope that helps

You don't need a meter to find the pairs. just spin the motor with no pairs connected then connect one pair and spin if ther is resistance then those are a pair. just repeat once you have the pairs you can wire them up. if it spins the wrong way just swap the pair and it will spin the way you need.

Also you can have a 4 wire a 6 wire and a 8 wire stepper motor.

Here is a good description

http://digital.ni.com/public.nsf/allkb/ … C70017B9E2

Hi,

Not an expert, but when I was doing the Bowden conversion for my 1.0 I also decided to use separate motor. The wiring did not match. Regular Nema 17 should have 6 pins (4 of them are actually used). If you have a tester, check for the resistants between the pins. The one's that make up a pair will have a resistance between them. Now you can take a
da vinci extruder nema motor and test for the resistance between the pins the same way. Connect the wires to the new motor based on the measurements. You only really have couple of most common connection patters: 1/3 and 4/6 for example. You can measure the resistance without powering the motor.
