I would get a temp probe of some sort, one that uses contact. The source is too small to be measured accurately by and IR thermometer. Use a cooking thermometer or a multimeter with a thermocouple and a temp option. You need to confirm reported temp versus accurate temp. The smoking and grinding all point to excessive temp. ABS hardens in the extruder once you get over 240 - 250 range.

I think you have something wrong with your tempsensor, because abs would normally not smoke until you reach 260-270 something.

I have been trying different temps with ABS and anything over 230 degrees the filament starts to smoke? ideas? try other rolls of filament and same problem. Also lowered my extrusion flow rate by 50% and still the extruder keeps grinding the filament and the filament stops flowing.
