These small issues can be frustrating, but stick with it.  Once properly tuned up, you should be getting some very good results from your SD3.  You have to keep a mindset that when you bought a SD, you bought an assembled kit...which leaves lots of room for tuning and mods!

I am not going to go into detail as I am not an SD3 user but normally you can get a copy of the firmware and make changes to it using Arduino and then upload the revised firmware to the printer. If you are interested in such a thing I would suggest starting a new thread in the SD3 section and ask for help or search and see if such a thread exist on updating or making changes to SD3 firmware.

If you printer is shutting down due to overtemp then there is a limit set in your firmware. This can not be changed by host or slicer.

My first print was a modest success, the print appears to be airy and flimsy...suggesting to me that the flowrate is way off.

When I attempt to up the temperature to 215, I'm getting a type of temperature fault that shuts down the program before I start.

I've set the 215C limit in both the repetier program and slic3r program....

When I do get the system to print (at 205C) I can see that the drive pully on the filament is slipping...alot.  This suggests to me that the system is trying to feed more and possibly the plastic is not melting completely causing the slipping.

Any thoughts

Enclosing the printer is very helpful.
If you don't have glass on your bed get some.  Any cheap hardware glass will work.  That plus some AquaNet extreme hold will help your prints stick.  Also use it to stick the glass to the platform.  Clips can warp the glass.
A good level bed (in relation to the nozzle) is a must.
ABS works best when the first layer is squished like a nice flat ribbon.
run the bed temp about 105 or as close to that as it will get.
Using a stock hot end run an extruder temp about 215.

A couple of things to note about profiles.
Nozzle diameter setting (do you know the actual nozzle size?) most likely a .4
Filament diameter.
Extrusion widths set based on your nozzle diameter.  .42 for .35.....  .48 for .4
Layer heights start at .2963 (.3)
Then print a 20x20 calibration cube that is single perimeter single bottom layer and no top layer.
This can be all done with a simple drawing of a solid cube.  Just use the slicer settings to print a hollow cube.  You'll use this cube to calibrate your extrusion multiplier.
Take a look at the WIKI for calibration of your steps/mm calibration for E: this should be your first step.
That should keep you busy for a while.

my next step is to remove the pigtail of filament and install from the reel

I'm going to find a start up procedure any ideas of where to go next would be greatly appreciated

Repetier had the port set to virtual....I changed it to Port 6

I have turned both the computer and the printer on and off several times....even making sure that the arduino isn't catching power from the usb
