I'm still working on this :-). I've actually reached the point where I'm trying to start putting the parts together. I just got a bunch of custom cut t-slot from Misumi to use for the parts of the frame nothing has to roll on, and I've tested assembly of the basic frame:

Everything I read about it says it makes sense and works fine, but it will be a while before I can actually try it - I don't want to start cutting v-slot till I'm positive I know what length I want everything to be :-).

You can dial stuff in on CAD all you want, but there's always some "gotcha" issues that arise...but that's why we prototype!

BTW, Have you verified the modified (non-crossover) Corexy setup yet?

So the hazards of prototyping have been revealed:

The real wheels work great, but I failed to take into account the space required by the shims I also need, so there is a big gap now where the top and bottom halves were supposed to meet around the opening for attaching the X rail. Guess I'll be adjusting my openscad and reprinting a lot of stuff.

More on the v-slot rails and wheels: I'm very impressed with how solid it all is. No force I can apply by hand will make it move in any direction other than along the rail where it is supposed to move (not that I'm as strong as Hafþór Júlíus Björnsson, mind you, but it is definitely very solid). And that is with just 3 of the mini wheels. Obviously I won't know how well it works for real till I have the motors dragging it around, but it sure seems promising.

Just a progress update: I've printed not only the extruder but all the carriages. Here's a family portrait with everything on one v-slot rail:

Haven't gotten my official wheels and spacers and wot-not yet, so these are using dummy plastic prints at the moment. I've updated the project home page with a bit more organization: http://home.comcast.net/~tomhorsley/har … orexy.html

I'm also working on a more extensive openscad preview of the entire assembly (which I should be able to use to decide on the dimensions I need to allow a full range of motion, and make sure things won't collide :-).

While waiting for some parts to come in so I can get exact measurements for the X and Y carriages, I designed a new extruder to use on this thing (assuming it works, mind you):

I plan to just get X & Y working first so I can see how accurate I can get things just using it as a plotter. I'm hoping for better accuracy than the SD2 I have now, but time will tell.

Keep on truckin! I'm a huge fan of CoreXY designs because of the ridiculous speeds you can achieve with so little moving mass (assuming Bowden). Some CoreXY machines can move pretty accurately up to a meter a second (Fusion3).

I've been churning out different ways to arrange the belts and carriages for the core XY printer I'm designing (and hopefully building). I think I've actually got a reasonable configuration for the carriages now (using openscad for everything, BTW):

Just wondering if it makes any sense at all to anyone else? (This is about my 3rd or 4th iteration so I've come up with reasons to reject a few previous designs).
