yes ian it's an encoder for measuring length
yes CFTechno it's two rails for drawer allowing it to slide left /right
ian for controlling the tension of filament 
i use a piece of an old videotape and a bearing the filament is squezze beetwen them

I like the belt tensioner, looks like you can change gear sizes without needing to change the position of the motor.  How are you controlling the tension of the filament on the spool?
