How much of this is entirely removed by going to direct drive? :-) or perhaps better asked... How much of the need to adjust this from time to time is removed by going to direct drive. :-)

According to this image...]]> Looks to me like you have the short motor belt way too loose. You're basically printing ovals. This is a Y axis problem for sure though. Just keep trying you'll get it right, it's a pain.

so I guess I'll go back through the process again.. it really is just hit or miss though. :-/

I think if the drive rod didn't slide back and forth things would be so much easier. :-/

I've spent a load of time trying to get my printer 'just so'. And it's been really good. But I'm wondering what adjustment I need to make for a print with gaps in these places.

The gaps are consistently in the back left and front right corners. (the picture shows this).

I don't really want to change my print head out until I have this fixed, one bug at a time.

Is this an issue of belt tension?
