For $ 300 not a lot to loose. cant even buy a kit for that price. I bid on a used davinci about six months ago ened up going with the SD$ seemed like a better choice at the time. And I got a god deal on a used one as well.
so good luck I would say push it to its limits as a stock machine. If you find the limits too limiting then you can mod it. I am still running the SD stock. May mod it but if I want to . did not like feeling forced into it.
Sounds like you have the right mind set to make it work.
Tin

I would strongly suggest using the stock everything until you get the hang of vocab, processes, and drawbacks. Use the machine until you find something that can only be fixed by hacking the cartridge or changing the firmware. Too much too fast will make getting into 3D printing more difficult.

Unless this is not your first printer, you are going to find this is not a plug and play hobby and you must learn how to make tweeks and stuff to get optimal prints before you start making firmware, hardware, and host changes.
