I hear you ticktock . Most of us are into this as a hobby , for fun to make a few repair parts around the house to make a chaskis for friends and family. I purchased my SD4 used and it is still stock . And I get decent prints from it. But I use pla and I think I need to add a cooling fan. I took a gamble and purchased a used machine as I did not want to drop a grand on a new one (that was before the price drop. ) And does it make sense to spend two grand on a Ultimaker 2 that could be obsolete in 3-5 years. That is unless it will pay for itself in those years. I want a better second machine myself but have not decided what it should be. Do I build or buy? Kit or scratch?... either way lots of choices.
tin

Seems like it but I have not seen any evidence. Yes, I've seen a lot of crappy prints from crappy printers, but I've seen a lot of good ones, too, from the same printers. It would be a great if there was a thread or Wiki showcasing "the best of ..." where you can compare the best prints from various machines to see what that money buys you besides less aggravation. All the pictures of prints from $2K+ machines don't look any better than what I can do on my SD4 now that I've invested the time to tune it. Mine is heavily modded now with Lawsy, E3d, etc, but it printed quite well with the stock (until stock broke :-)). I appreciate a quality machine, don't get me wrong, but I also appreciate keeping that extra $1500 in my pocket.

I have to believe there is fundamental differences in different designs execution of the design and quality of the parts that go in the machine. many of the designs have flimsy frames. the soliddoodle is anything but solid. Poorly soddered boards give poor performance etc etc.
You pay for more than a name you pay for quality engineering , quality components and quality manufacturing.
Also the better machines are designed for a variety of materials not just abs.
tin

Do any of the FDM machines show a clear advantage on print quality. As far as I can tell the main difference is just how much fussing you have to do but in the end they all seem to print with the same quality of finish once the low end models are dialed in.

Best choice is sometimes a personal matter. If you have the 2 grand to plunk down The Ultimaker 2 is a fine machine.
there are many choices these days see this linkhttp://www.3ders.org/pricecompare/3dprinters/.
The asterid plastic scribbler line seems nice for the money , but someone here sai they are stopping production. The web site looks like they are still taking orders.

Like anything else what are you planning on using it for ? what is your budget? etc.
where do yo plan to use the machine ? do you need want dual extruders. What size print bed do you need. What materials do you want to print ?
One that is not on your list you may want to add for consideration is the flash forge . the creator pro is about the top of there line and metal frame. IIRC $1200-1400.
The old conundrum . You ask questions to select a printer but you do not often know what to ask until you have a printer and try do do a project.
Tin

What are the best 3D printers out there in your opinion? Currently using SD3 and love it , but thinking technology is better now.

Looking at:

Solidoodle Workbench
Lulzbot Taz 4
Ultimaker 2

I am looking for faster printing (over SD3), dual extruders, and ability to easily use stuff like Ninjaflex which I'm having too many issues with on SD3.

The Taz 4 looks nice as far as dual extruder support and ninjaflex support goes, though the extremely fast 300 mm/s printing on the ultimaker looks beautiful. Of course, there's the SD workbench, which is by far cheaper than the other 2 options which also has dual extruders, but no built-in ninjaflex support.

Of course, the taz4 and ultimaker use 3mm filament instead of 1.75mm filament, which sucks as I would have to get rid of my 12 rolls of 1.75mm colored filament.
