But I believe I have the old-style feed tubes for the nozzles.

I can see myself doing that upgrade at some point.  Like you said in another post we can switch our boards out.  However, I am not there yet.  This is a new hobby for me and want to become more comfortable with it.  My machine is still under warranty so I probably will not make any move until after that.

Also it would be great if there was a really spelled out tutorial about this at some point. Maybe there is and I am missing it.

For now I will try to work with this as best I can and most likely reframe from any further software/firmware updates unless I know they are "safe".

You think maybe they're moving to something like a cartridge like chip on the extruder so they can keep track of it as well as the filament?

Well the support refill filament probably has something to do with the fact that they will be selling refill kits for their filament cartridges.  Per their youtube video they appear to come with the new filament and the a new PCB to allow the filament to print.  I just hope they have not made the software/firmware harder to work with other non-XYZ filament.

There is an easy way around all of this security. They can enforce it, update it, and do whatever but if their board is no longer running the printer then you can use any filament and any host you want. Aside from their controller this is just any other printer and any other board such as RAMPS, SANGOLULU, SMOOTHIE, and so will work in it.
