Coupled with a remote screen program, this allows you to start and monitor prints remotely.

Octoprint is a more elegant solution and is geared to run on a dedicated computer and managed via web interface. It's effectively a print server and works well on a cheap single-board computer like the Raspberry Pi or Beaglebone Black. I have it on a RasPi with a camera attached and frankly can't imagine running without it now. Not only do I have my laptop back but I can also check/start/stop prints from my phone or tablet.

Note that if you don't mind leaving your computer connected, you can also use Simplify3d ($140, but well worth the money IMHO - http://www.simplify3d.com). Alternately, if you have a Mac/Windows/Linux machine or (better yet) a Raspberry Pi or Beaglebone, you can install the excellent Octoprint (http://octoprint.org) server and do everything via web interface.

Not sure why but Repetier firmware is bugged and won't talk to anything else. XYZ looks for a port name that is no longer there once you install Repetier firmware. The port becomes an Adruino Due port and XYZ does not know how to talk to that type of port.
