If you end goal for adding an SD card reader is just to print without typing up your PC, consider just using the gcode printr app on an old android tablet. It is about 50 times easier than replacing a motherboard or bending over backwards to make the card reader work with the sang. board.

wire10ga,

Thanks! I am looking into OctoPi as well, just thought a display on the printer itself would be handy too.
I have a RaspberryPi sitting around and am downloading the OctoPi image on it now. What I don't know is if OctoPi can support a display or controller itself, as the RasPi has vastly more computing power to bring to bear on the UI than the Atmel ATMega. That would be nice indeed.

Additionally, it seemed to me that being able to build the FW from source so I can make adjustments to various things would be desirable, for exmaple, my printer extrudes 115mm when asked for 100mm for example, so the E-steps setting is a bit off.

It has (or well had, I think I am close) been more of a fight to get a decent firmware image that met these requirements:

1) built from source so I could change things, like E-steps and so on.
2) actually booted (the images I got from support at solidoodle didn't work)
3) would run on a ATMega1284p, to allow more space for code like LCD display.

I've gotten 1 and 2 sorted out, and I think I know what happened on #3, I didn't have a boot loader installed on the 1284, so while I could build and flash the FW it didn't execute. If this theory is right, I know how to flash the bootloader and such, I just have to get time to try it.

Basically my end goal to optimize the printer as best it can be for the HW I have, with minimal upgrades to the HW, use it, and then see what HW upgrades might be desirable.

Thanks again for your thoughts!

--neil.

Hi all. I have a very early model SD3 Solidoodle, and would like to add an LCD / SD card.

It actually has the Sanguinololu motherboard (as I understand it they moved to a slightly modified Printrboard later).

The Sanguinololu has the smaller 64kB ATmega 644P, but I believe I can update it to the 128kB ATmega 1284P, to have more space for FW.

I have built and installed the ozadr1an/Solidoodle-Marlin_v1 from github (sorry can't post link apparently), but I do want to add an SD card and LCD display.

Most of the LCD add on kits I have seen are for newer boards, are there any that are known to work on the Sanguinololu? or should I punt and replace the motherboard. I'd love to use the RepRap full graphic controller + LCD but not sure it will fit in the ATMega 1284P (it looks tight), so a smaller simpler 4 line text display + SDcard would be fine too.

Any suggestions?

--neil.
