To each their own. No slicer is the clear cut winner to use currently. Each has their upsides and down sides. Basically you should be using what you fell most comfortable with, go through calibrations with that slicer and get your printer printing good first. A lot of us have put in significant time with the various slicer programs. Everything you said points to calibration issues not slicer issues. Keep in mind slicer will not necessarily ve set up similar to skeinforge unless you go through the settings yourself and make them similar

My issue with Slic3r and Repetier was do to "setting the height of the first layer more than the nozzle opening." That's not the error message that shows in the popup but if you look at the message section at the bottom of Repetier you'll see a note to that effect. Took quite a while before I discovered that one. Works perfect now. Well, as perfect as I can make it work. [smirk]

That looks like the extruder calibration is way off, and its not pulling in enough filament. Slic3r really does to a better job once you get your settings done right. That said, if you really feel like skienforge is better, you can very easily run skienforge with repetier. Just activate it on the slicer tab. You can also run slic3r with pronterface, by running them separately.

Hello!

I'm new to this forum and to Solidoodle printing so I apologize if what I write might sound stupid.

Pronterface + Skeinforge
I have used and i works reasonably well. Only a couple of issues. Maybe someone has a clever solution for this

First layer gets laid down offset to the rest of the layers in X-axis. This is not a problem but I need to trim off the first layer every object with a knife every time.

When the nozzle travels from one end of the print to the other it splurges out a small stream of ABS over the object leaving ugly trails. Is there a way to force it to retract before travelling over a certain distance?

My prints tend to be a little off center. When printing an object 148mm in length, part of the object gets printed 3-4 mm in to the bed towards the back of the print bed, and the other end gets printed off the print bed. I had hoped to print as big of an object as possible.

Repetier + Slic3r
I also tried which at first glance look promising but makes worthless prints. I think this is down to Slic3r.
I like the polished "complete solution" that Repetier is, giving a intuitive way to position and multiply object.

However, Repetier or Slicer (don't know which) makes the print REALLY brittle and sloppy. The nozzle moves way to fast for any plastic to get extruded. The plastic doesn't even stick to itself and the print is very haphazardly printed. What can I change to avoid these problems? I really want to be able to use Repetier. (See images comparing Skeinforge vs. Slic3r)

General question
If I want to print an object on the diagonal instead to be able to have a longer object, how would I go about doing that in Skeinforge? I Repetier I think it would be straightforward to do since you get a preview of the print.

Thank you for your help!
Have a nice day!
