I figured it out: I really didn't have a model where all the pieces were fully joined. I've uploaded slightly tweaked openscad now, and slic3r likes the model produced directly by openscad (no more bits floating in space :-).

I figured ha, on the phone i just couldn't actually look at the model. You definitely took an interesting approach to it! If you have the play doh you could easily do resin casting for that mount!

I don't think the model should have any problems with the Z stop. I built a model of all the buttons and rivets and wot-not to subtract off the side of the mount so it would fit around them all (Play-Doh and a flatbed scanner worked wonders :-).

I did run it through netfabb basic, and at least it brings up the warning icon, but I have no idea exactly what it is warning me about. Probably I don't have some of my nice curved pieces properly joined to the rest of the model or something. In any case, the repair service fixes it, so I can get a good stl by hook or by crook.

Now I've added some holes and notches since my first one curled up when I tried to print it (but I haven't updated the thingiverse files yet - I'll wait till I know I can print it first).

Yes. I see weird behavior with Slic3r sometimest with downloaded STLs. I used to get these weird anomalies even for my own models generated with Solidworks but noticed that when it happens it is always accompanied by Solidoworks asking if I wanted to export all bodies or just selected bodies even though there is only one body and me choosing all bodies. Now, I always tell it to just export selected bodies when that happens and have not had any problems since. I guess Solidworks must get some extra junk in the model that you can't see but results in bad STL files.

Some very curious results for the part I've been building which I put on thingiverse: http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:593006

I've never had openscad generate bad stl before, and slic3r doesn't complain (that I can see) about the motor_mount.stl file in that thing, but when I try to slice it, I get three tiny little segments (two floating in space), and most of the model disappeared.

The motor_mount_fixed.stl is the exact same part run through the netfabb online repair service, and it slices fine (it is also half the size). I can't figure out if there is actually an error in the model openscad generated, or if slic3r has the problem.

Anyone seen anything like this before? (I have generated busted models with openscad, but usually people complain about them :-).
