I make home brewed beer and had also pondered this question. I wanted to print some pieces to use, like airlocks, so i won't have to buy them.

While I'm no plastics scientist, I drew the same conclusion last month when i spent some time to googling it. As long as you'r not heating the 3d print you should be fine.

***One thing to note is that actual 'food grade plastic' is new plastic resin that has not been made from recycled material. So I guess if you're buying plastic filament from some somewhere that you know makes it out of recycled material then be aware of that. I'm under the assumption & impression though that most of the plastic filament that is sold is 'new' plastic and not recycled.

I find ABS very stable unless you heat it. Cold drinks in cups and/or cold food on a plate don't seem detrimental to health as ABS doesn't really leak anything when just sitting there. As a result I have no problems making items that touch food so long as there is no heat involved. Cookie cutters come to mind as I'm ramping my Xmas production up.

Edit:
See here: http://healthychild.org/5steps/5_steps_5/
