No experience with that mill, but I can speak for Inventables in general...They are an outstanding company and I have faith in any product they sell!

the bb becomes a dedicated computer but the size of a couple packs of cigarettes. and for about the same price as  smooth stepper .  The BBB will only run linux cnc but the software is free . You will need a HDMI display and wireless or USB mouse and keyboard.and a couple of cables. Choices choices.

guessing a usb - parallel convertor wouldnt work...be far too easy amiright?

You can run Mach 3 off a USB or Ethernet connector but you need a dedicated motion controller.
the most popular one is the  smooth stepper http://www.warp9td.com/  but there others as well .

If you go this route, get one with the black control box not the blue control box.  If it's too big for what you need, search for 3020.

planning on opening it up in birmingham UK as there is a large number of product design courses the 3d printing could be used for but birmingham is very well known for its jewelly and there are loads of jewelley students so the imodela could add a nice little niche for lost wax casting.

Could be used to add detail to 3D printed parts.
Roland is a company that has been around since the 1970s and is well known for electronic key boards  then later for printing vinyl cutting and graphic arts machines.
the work envelope is tiny 2 x 3 x 1 or 50 mm x 75 mm x 25 mm
a great looking little machine . And IIRC the best price I have ever seen for a plug and play micro mill.
