To me, the Press is a step down (though the enclosure IS very cool.) I don't think it is one I would purchase for modding. It is intended for the plug-and-play type of market.

As for the spools. You have a 3D printer. Make your own spools.

My solution I am leaning towards as of now will to be to have a few filament spools of the right size and simply transfer my filament onto the correctly sized rolls as needed.

EG buy something like this http://www.ebay.com/itm/Empty-3D-Printe … 5aff0b2795 (not sure it's right size yet)

Then print up a chuck adapter that would allow you to spin a spool the the power drill to quickly transfer filament from incorrectly sized rolls to the properly sized rolls. Procedure would just take a few minutes at most.

Hehe it's a valid thought, totally with you, and it's great to have someone so keen on mods to take up the mantle on a new machine. Your future work is likely to be of benefit to a lot of other people - I am a keen modder myself, and it was the community mods on this forum that convinced me a solidoodle was an excellent base to start from.

That said, printer no 2 for me will be a homebrew job, I'll back-track some upgrades on the SD3 as I go to use the nice bits in the new machine, and hopefully create something even better with what I've learnt from the SD and you guys.

Honestly I upgraded to a press for two reasons... Keep my model up to date for easier resale, and I liked the enclosure better than mine. Other than that it really is a 3/4 + or minus a few improvements. Don't get me wrong i'd love to be proven wrong by Solidoodle and see a printer that truly comes out of the box swinging like a champ.

But in reality I am planning on modding the thing right away. What will l mod? not sure. But I am sure something will need modded. I just don't have that kind of confidence in solidoodle's design choices yet. If I need to i'll replace the MB all together. I've got a handful of ramps + mega's lying around. And I am prepared to throw on my DIY version of a bulldog extruder.

I realize the injection molded frame seems like a bit of a down grade, but at the same time... I am not so sure it will make a single oz of difference in print quality/precision. The biggest worry I would have is constantly recalibrating my bed, but with the bed compensation probe i'm not really worried.

I guess what I am throwing out there is it seems like while the press looks like a hopeful one-touch printing solution for home consumers from SD's perspective; to me it just looks like a much more attractive set of bones to mod into beautiful solidoodle frankenglory.

Anybody else thinking the same thing? "Hey their SD press... I look forward to modding you into awesomeness!"
