They should not be to tight or to loose. I saw the same issue with mine. If you are not careful, the one side of the belts can be loose while the other seems too tight (same belt, other pulley).

Cool the electronics and the motor if it's getting hot.
Adjust the VREF's
Most important calibrate and lubricate... Most times something is misaligned or binding.
