I've actually never had that problem to any large extent, especially once I've used a bunch of filament off the spool and it is no longer so close to the edge. I'm pretty sure that even with a full spool, if I were to cutout some cardboard circles a couple of inches bigger in diameter than the spool I could stick them on either side and put a stop to the rare entanglements. I use this spool holder, and perhaps the ball bearings help keep the tension down:

http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:168935

P.S. Has thingiverse gotten really really slow for everyone else the last few days?

I've seen designs of different kinds of spool mounts out there, but none that solves the REAL problem, that is, the plastic threads will spontaneously spasm out of their spools and tangle themselves up into anything that's near. Especially the red one... Odd.
To solve it you'd need something that encapsulates the entire spool so the threads will have no place to spasm out to, but that'd just look silly like a giant wheel. How do people live with this behaviour? On a good day I can walk out from my printer but some days (like today, hence this post) I need to babysit it and un-tangle it every 5-10 minutes.
