What happens when you manually have it extrude say 100 mm into the air?

OK, so I finally got the printer running.

I installed new motherboard. I loaded new software as described on Solidoodle web site. I installed the serial driver.

I tested x, y z motion, home, and set z height.

I loaded a test file.

The printer seemed to be working fine, printing a 1x1x1 inch box with open top and 0.1 sides.

Less than half way through the print, the extruder stopped advancing filament. the motor "isolates." rotates a fraction of a degree then the other way.

If I manually force the filament down into the extruder hot end, the filament comes out slowly, and the motor will rotate.

If I press the retract command on the screen, the same thing.. the motor isolates but doesn't really do anything.

I had this issue a year ago.. never solved it.

how do I figure this out. It is very frustrating.

Any suggestions will be appreciated.
